Catholic school board gender identity policy not yet approved

Alberta’s Education Minister has taken to Twitter to correct reports that the Grande Prairie Catholic school board’s gender identity policy has been approved. David Eggen says no policies submitted by school boards have been accepted yet, and that the formal review process will only start after the deadline of March 31st.

The province released a set of guidelines for the procedures prompted by Bill 10, but the Catholic board strayed away from recommendations that parents not be informed when children say they identify as another sex. Parents must also make any request to wear an alternate uniform or accommodations for washrooms and change rooms.

Eggen says he’ll be in touch with the board to clear up any “miscommunication or misunderstandings.”
