Team Alberta North takes third overall at Arctic Winter Games

The Arctic Winter Games wrapped up this past weekend in Nuuk Greenland and Team Alberta North brought home some hardware. Overall they finished in third with 88 medals, including 29 gold.

Winnings included Snowboard Cross Junior Female with gold going to Alex McKinnon of Fort McMurray and silver to Serena Houle of Grande Prairie. The females were all about winning in the Cross category with GP’s Kendyl Hotte and Karli Gordon, taking gold and silver, respectively.

Helping with the gold was the Junior Male Volleyball team, while the male bantam hockey team for Alberta claimed the gold medal with a score of 5-4 in the final game.

Team Alberta North competed against other Northern Teams like Nunavut, Sapmi, Yamal, and the North West Territories in 13 different sports and culture events. Biathlon, cross country skiing, Arctic Sports, and wrestling were some of the events held at the “friendly games”.

Alaska took first overall and Yukon came in right before Northern Alberta with 100 medals.
