Sexsmith native signed to Pittsburgh Penguins

A Grande Prairie Storm product has been signed to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Sexsmith native Carter Rowney has inked a two-year contract with the NHL franchise, with an annual average value of $612,500.

The two-way deal begins with the 2016-2017 season and runs though 2017-2018. Rowney has spent the last three years with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League, playing 145 regular season games and scoring 29 goals and 45 assists.

The forward got his start with the Storm, playing from 2006 to 2009. He moved on from there to the University of North Dakota, winning three WCHA titles and serving as alternate captain as a senior.
