Alberta books ticket to Scotties final

For the second time in the tournament, Chelsea Carey got the best of Jennifer Jones. Team Alberta took the 1-2 page playoff with a 7-5 win over Team Canada at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

The last time Carey was in the Scotties it was as skip for Manitoba. Just like this year, her rink went 9-2 in the round robin, but ended up with a medal.

“It’s just exciting. The last time I was here we lost the 1-2 game and a lost the semifinal and it really hurts not to be in that final so we’re really excited to have a chance on Sunday and we’ll leave it all on the ice and see what happens.”

Carey called it a solid team performance, with back from lead Laine Peters, second Jocelyn Peterman and third Amy Nixon. While this is Peter’s 10th Scotties appearance, it’s the first for Peterman. She says it’s been a dream to make it this far.

“I’m so lucky to be able to play my first Scotties in my home [province]. I have so many family members here and hearing that roar when we make a shot or at the end of the game, it’s really cool.”

Team Alberta will move on to the gold medal game Sunday while Team Canada will play in the semi final Saturday night against the winner of the 3-4 page playoff between Manitoba and Northern Ontario in the morning. Jones says the loss Friday isn’t going to phase her rink.

“I’ve always said that playing in the semis is a good thing if you know you’re going to win; we don’t know we’re going to win yet but we’ll give it a shot. It’s always good to be on the ice as much as you can so we’re okay. If you’re going to lose a game, the 1-2 game is the game to lose.”

Jones has won five Scotties tournaments. The 3-4 game starts at 1:30 Saturday at Revolution Place.
