Charles Spencer forming its own football team

Charles Spencer High School will field its own football team this season. For the past two years they’ve played on a combined team with the Composite High School Warriors, but now they’ll separate to become The Mavericks. Head Coach Calvin Regan says having two teams was always the plan.

“The joint team was massive; we had probably too many players. Financially, it was just unreasonable to try and start a new team. However, this year we were contacted by a local trucking company and they offered to give us some money in terms of sponsorship.”

The funds from Goulet Trucking helped purchase a large chunk of the equipment needed.

Spring training starts in May and Regan expects to have no issues filling out his roster. However, he admits there will be challenges starting a new squad.

“The biggest thing for us is just making sure our fundamental skills are down, especially where we might have more than usual numbers of players who have never played the game before. Our spring camp will be a lot of focus on fundamental skills: tackling, blocking, running, catching; that sort of thing.”

Regan expects to see 25 to 30 players. Training camp will be wrapped up with a Football Jamboree that will include both GP teams.
