Schools in Grande Prairie paint the town pink

A day that started in 2007 in Nova Scotia to stand up against Anti bullying now has many people across Canada taking part, including Derek Taylor School in Grande Prairie. Principal Nancy Gorgichuk says Pink Shirt day is a day they used to emphasize Anti bullying but they gave have used the entire month to have a highlight on it. She says she knows the parents are hearing about it at home.

“One of our grade one moms brought t-shirts in for all of the students in her daughters class that say “Be a Buddy, Not a Bully”. We didn’t ask her to do that. She just showed up, gave them to the teacher, and said I know that this is really important to your school and I don’t want anyone to be left out.”

She explains that the students are taught the difference between tattling and telling.

“It is very intentional and we have to work together with the staff to find out what each level can understand…but a day like Pink Shirt Day, they all understand that we are coming together as a school to say bullying is wrong.”

The principal also adds that bullying isn’t a one time thing and someone who is being bullied has to be targeted over time. They also avoid over-using the word ‘bullying’ in hopes to not desensitize it’s meaning and add in words like ‘conflict’.
