Ontario snaps Alberta’s Scotties win streak

She predicted it would happen; Chelsea Carey has suffered her first loss at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. The Team Alberta skip was on a roll, heading into draw 10 with a 6-0 record, but Team Ontario was able to pull off a 7-5 win.

“It’s tough,” Carey admits. “We knew somebody was going to eventually punish us if we kept playing not great; that’s how we started that game and we turned it around and got a lot better. We played a couple of good ends at least, so we take that away. We need to play like that moving forward and then we won’t be back in this situation hopefully.”

Ontario is now 3-3 thanks to two wins Tuesday. Skip Jenn Hanna admits they left the rink Monday feeling down about their 1-3 record.

“We had a couple drinks in the hotel and we chatted. We decided that we had to come out a little bit looser; we had to come out and try to have a little bit more fun and just live in the moment, one shot at a time, and the rest takes care of itself.”

It’s hard to believe Jennifer Jones had a losing record early in the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Team Canada has won their last three draws in a row and dominated Saskatchewan 11-5 thanks to a five-ender in the sixth Tuesday night. Jones argues her rink’s experience helps keep them steady.

“You maybe don’t start the way you want but you know that you still have it in you and we can draw on some experiences in the past and we never panic; we know that we control our own fate and so we just have to get on a bit of a roll.”

Canada now has a 4-2 record, tied with Quebec and just behind Northern Ontario at 5-1.

Draw 11 starts Wednesday morning at 8:30.
