“Pretty strong for an old guy”: National gold medal winner from Grande Prairie

Darwin Eckstrom says he is “Pretty Strong for an old guy” following his gold medal win for Alberta over the weekend in Saskatchewan. He competed in Canadian Power lifting and Bench Press Championships which were held in Regina last week. During the competition athletes squat, bench press then dead lift. Grande Prairie’s Eckstrom tied for dead lifts in his class as well as squat records and did 200 kilograms in bench press.

Alongside the gold medalist, Kaity Sparks of the Swan City represented Alberta and took third in her weight class. In the 57 kilogram junior division, she got a total of 302.5. The bronze medalist did 2 times her body weight squat at 247.5 pounds and pulled a body weight PR on dead lift at 292.5 pounds.

Sparks was up against British Columbia’s Rachel Anyi, Alberta’s Alexandra Stodalka, and Ontario’s Kelly Lien.
