UPDATE: The smoke spotted in a remote area near the Dunes turned out to be a controlled burn. Regional Fire Service says they did find evidence in the area of illegal campfires and they warn that these come with a price. Fines of up to $5000 can be applied to illegal campfires as well as any third-party expenses from battling the fire. They add that open fires are not allowed in this area.
A fire has been sparked in a remote area of the Dunes that is causing smoke in the area south of Aspen Ridge. County firefighters won’t be able to reach it safely until there’s daylight, but crews are closely monitoring it to make sure it’s contained and doesn’t spread.
At this point, there is no threat to any structures. We will update when we learn more.
