Trial for surgeon charged with sexual assault underway

After years of delays, the trial for a Grande Prairie surgeon charged with three counts of sexual assault started today. Dr. Romelito Delacruz has been accused of inappropriately examining three female patients, including one who was 16 years old at the time.

The ear, nose and throat surgeon was suspended in November 2012 after two complaints were made to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta stemming from incidents in 2007 and 2008. At the time of his hearing, Delacruz was found guilty of inappropriately touching their exposed breasts, buttocks, and labia.

The 43 year old is currently practicing in Grande Prairie but can only see male patients. He has had his case delayed several times, including a postponement of his trial last year due to illness.
