People across Canada are still being targeted by a tax scam. According to RCMP and the Canada Revenue Service, taxpayers get a phone call from someone saying they either owe money or have a tax refund.
The caller threatens them with arrest or jail time if they don’t immediately provide their financial information. The Minister of National Revenue warns that with tax filing season coming up, the number of scammers will peak.
Anyone who has given out personal information by mistake or believes they are a victim of this crime should contact local police and their bank. You can confirm if someone is an actual CRA employee by using its official telephone number.
