Electronic fare collection boxes coming soon to Grande Prairie buses

We should see electronic fare collection boxes on city buses by the end of the year. The city got a $4.3 millionĀ GreenTRIP grant late last year, which will help cover the estimated $400,000Ā cost to install them on its 21 bus fleet.Ā Transit services manager Jason Henry says they want to start collecting the data as soon as possible.
Ā
“Things like route performance information; passenger loads are important to help us sort of gauge what bus stops have the highestĀ frequency of use and which ones are giving you the least amount. Overall it just helps us understand our system performance.”
Ā
Right now the drivers are gathering that information by hand.Ā Henry adds that there are also benefits for users.
Ā
“Things like e-ticketing; passengers can load card at various places around the city, potentially even online. Right now if you lose your monthly pass, it’s lost; if things become digital, then there’s a record of it and it becomes just a matter of replacing that card.”
Ā
City council will make a decision on whether to move funds allocated for the project next year to this year’s budget so things can get moving.
