Wind powers schools in the Peace Country

There are now light switches at schools in the Peace Country powered by wind energy. Grande Prairie and District Catholics Schools, Holy Family Catholic Regional District and the High Prairie School Division are three of 24 Alberta school divisions using the Alberta Schools Commodity Purchasing Consortium.

The aim of the CPC is to find a source of alternative energy, which lead to a facility being built northeast of Provost. The Bull Creek Wind Facility has the ability to produce enough energy to power about 500 schools every year.

The three school divisions entered the CPC in 2005 and, with the use of the wind energy, are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions every year that is equivalent to 16,842 passenger vehicles.
