City to purchase Public School Division admin office

The City of Grande Prairie will spend $1,530,000 buying the Grande Prairie Public School Division administration office and the land that it is on. Community Living Director Garry Roth says they’re looking into both community and commercial uses for the building.

“We haven’t 100 per cent determined who will be moving into this school building because the possession date isn’t until next December. So, we have almost a year to finalize who will be moving over there.”

He explains the city started talks about buying the building in November because it was the only building on the block that they did not own. The building is located on the corner across from the art gallery on 99th street and 104 Avenue.

Roth also adds this purchase will open opportunity for future development.

“Us as a city, to be able to have long term plans for the site. It is certainly valuable to us to be able to have access to the property for future development.”

Roth says the sale price of the building was determined by the average of the appraisals done by both, the City and the Public School Board.
