It’s a party three-quarters of a century in the making this weekend as the County of Grande Prairie celebrates the 75th anniversary of its incorporation.
The celebration at Evergreen Park begins at noon Friday August 21 with live performances, family activities, a local market and interactive experiences. Country music star Brett Kissel will headline Saturday’s concert at 9 p.m., followed by what organizers describe as the Peace Region’s first drone light show. Saturday kicks off at 10 a.m. with a free pancake breakfast, while supplies last, followed by activities leading into the evening concert and drone light show.
County of Grande Prairie Reeve Amanda McDonald said for 75 years, the County of Grande Prairie has been built by the people who live and work in the region, and looks forward to celebrating the community as a whole.
“This anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on our shared history, celebrate how far we’ve come, and look ahead to an exciting future.”
The weekend will also include performances by Generations Readers Theatre, local musicians and dancers, wagon rides with the Peace Draft Horse Club, a local market featuring producers, artisans and makers, a car show and family activities.
Children and families can also take part in a Touch-a-Tractor experience, the Aquatera Family Fun Zone, roaming puppet entertainment and rides on the CN Mini Train. County equipment and fire trucks will also be on display.
County of Grande Prairie Division 3 Councillor Terri Beaupre says it’s an incredible milestone to celebrate and hopes to hear what people’s hopes and dreams are for the next 75.
“Our council will be there, if you want to come and talk to council and ask us questions; put them on the spot!,” she laughed. “Tell us what you want to see the county to look like in the next 75 years.”
