Grande Prairie City Council has approved a 10-year agreement between GPPS and Axon Public Safety Canada.
Axon Public Safety Canada carries multiple options to regional police, ranging from tasers to in-car digital video systems.
Included in the 10-year deal, The Grande Prairie Police Service will be supplied with body worn cameras, a province wide Digital Evidence Management System (DEMS), in-car digital video systems, and tasers.
The Axon taser is the only conductive energy device approved by the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services for police agencies to use.
The deal will come out to $3,977,479.39 plus applicable taxes. However, this contract will not be funded with new money, as GPPS has allocated this amount in their 2026 budget.
“This is not a new budget ask, this is still part of our budget cycle in the current fiscal, but also built into 2027,” said Chief of Police Dwayne Lakusta. “Having that solid projection allows us to forecast for the next 10 years with ease.”
The Grande Prairie Police Service are expected to become the police of jurisdiction in October.
