Valleyview RCMP member charged with assault in connection with November 2023 incident

A Valleyview RCMP officer has been charged with assault with a weapon following an investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team.

The civilian oversight agency announced Wednesday that Const. Ovidiu Haynes was charged on June 24 in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred in Valleyview on Nov. 10, 2023.

ASIRT was directed to investigate the matter later that month. Following its investigation, the agency said it found reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence had been committed and forwarded the file to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service for review, as required under the Police Act.

Haynes was arrested, released with conditions and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Valleyview on Aug. 6.

Few details about the underlying incident have been released. ASIRT said no additional information will be made public while the matter proceeds through the courts.

ASIRT is Alberta’s independent civilian agency responsible for investigating incidents involving police that may have resulted in serious injury, death or potential criminal offences.

The charge has not been proven in court.
