Sexsmith continues to work with rural RCMP as physical detachment in Clairmont draws closer

The Town of Sexsmith is preparing for the transition of the Clairmont RCMP detachment.

Sexsmith Mayor, Kate Potter says even though the detachment will be in Clairmont, it will still impact the town of Sexsmith.

“We are excited that the Clairmont detachment is moving forward, we know that this project has moved into this next four-year build cycle. Within four years, the actual building will be located in Clairmont.”

Potter added that the rural detachment has been meeting with the town on a regular basis, twice a year. During those meetings, town council has had the opportunity to share concerns and priorities with the RCMP.

Back in April, the town shared some feedback to the RCMP, that the town received on a policing survey that they conducted with residents. Some of the topics on the survey included how residents felt about the RCMP, safety, and policing overall.

“We were able to take that information direct from our residents to the RCMP.”

One of the key highlights residents brought up was the police presence and visibility in the community, awareness of what the police are doing, and the prevention of petty-like crimes.

“We were really pleased with their response to us, and how they had already identified some of the same issues or concerns that our residents highlighted.”

In October, the Grande Prairie Police Service is expected to become the Police of Jurisdiction in Grande Prairie.
