Charges laid in connection with Muskoseepi Trail assaults

An 18-year-old Grande Prairie man has been charged following an investigation into a series of assaults on the Muskoseepi trails.

Mounties say that on May 4 and May 6, two assaults that they believe to be related took place on the Muskoseepi Park walking trails near Bear Creek Park, between 68 Avenue and 84 Avenue.

Police say the first victim was allegedly struck in the back on the head with a pipe, by a man riding a bike. The second victim reported a similar incident.

Authorities say a comprehensive investigation took place over the next few weeks, and with the assistance of several units, including a RCMP Forensic Sketch Artist, a suspect was identified and arrested on June 10.

The accused faces charges of robbery, aggravated assault, assault causing bodily harm and two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Police said the accused was remanded into custody following a judicial hearing and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Grande Prairie on June 17.

Cpl. Kristy White of the Grande Prairie RCMP General Investigation Section said investigators are grateful for the assistance provided by members of the public through video surveillance, witness statements and other tips. She said police recognize the impact the attacks have had on the community and remain committed to public safety.
