Indigenous art gallery opens for the month of June in Beaverlodge

An all-Indigenous art gallery is currently on display for resident’s to check out in Beaverlodge.

The gallery features a handful of local Indigenous artists from across the Peace Region and the province.

Curator for the event, Natal Rivas Bolaños says not only is the gallery free to check out, but it’s a great way to get involved with the community.

“It’s also a really good opportunity to hear specifically about Indigenous voices, and seeing kind of the things that people have on their mind, and you know in their hearts and the things they want to share with the community.”

“It’s a great way to get involved and be in the community, and learn from local people.”

Natal added that there was little-to no barriers for artists to enroll and showcase their work, possibly helping some of them advance their career. This is the first time that Natal has curated for any event, making this exhibit an achievement for anyone participating.

The first day the exhibit opened was May 31, Natal mentioned that plenty of residents came out and supported the exhibit.

“Right now is like a time where Alberta feels a little bit divided, and maybe sometimes people aren’t getting along. One of the things I talked about during the artist talk was how this exhibition is really important because it shows how Indigenous people across Alberta are united.”

This is the third year that Indigenous artists have been invited to present an exhibition at the gallery.

The My Relatives, You Belong, art exhibition will be on display at the Beaverlodge Art & Culture Centre until June 25.
