Separation one of many different topics NDP leader Nenshi is hearing from Peace Region residents

Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi made a trip to the Peace Region this week, with several topics, including the non-binding separation referendum, a hot topic for those he spoke with.

Nenshi says they travel across Alberta quarter to quarter to quarter, with residents normally talking about the same four or five topics, but these days that list is ever growing.

“There’s different emphasis in different places, but people are primarily concerned about the cost of living, making ends meet, concerned about what I would say jobs now and in the future for themselves and their kids, about public health care, public education, but of course now a days the whole issue of separatism and the need to save Canada are probably the most important things for everyone.”

Nenshi added that one of the highlights for him on his trip, was getting to talk to some indigenous communities in and around the region.

“One of the really great things about this trip, is I’ve really gotten the chance to talk with indigenous communities. Those indigenous communities have been in the forefront of the fight against separatism, but also have a lot of issues and concerns about economic development and social development in their own areas. It has been really great for me, I have known the indigenous communities in southern Alberta very very well, it has been a really good opportunity for me to meet some of the folks in the north.”

Nenshi says that he left Calgary on the morning of Monday, June 1 to begin his trip.
