UPDATE: Police say their investigation is in the early stages but does not appear to be suspicious. Thereis no further risk to the public.
An explosion at a Nexen plant near Fort McMurray has killed one person and left another in critical condition. Wood Buffalo RCMP says the incident happened just after 5 p.m. at Nexen’s Long Lake facility.
The Alberta Energy Regulator says it is responding. The cause of the explosion is not yet known, along with whether there are any other injuries.
The oilsands facility was the subject of another AER investigation last year when a pipeline ruptured in June, spilling 31,000 barrels of emulsion. Nexen was ordered to suspend operations at 95 of its pipelines, which were partially resumed in September.
