Four potential locations for a new cenotaph up for debate

Four locations have been brought towards Grande Prairie City Council, to determine a new location for a cenotaph.

Back in January, a group of veterans brought forward a concern to council about the current location of the cenotaph, that currently sits in Jubilee Park. Council then asked administration to bring back a report regarding possible new locations.

During the Investment and Strategy Committee on Tuesday, March 24, administration brought a list of four locations for the cenotaph.

One of the four listed was Jubilee Park. However, there has been an issue with overcrowding during ceremonies held on Remembrance Day.

The second location was the Montrose Cultural Centre, but administration says that the location limits standing room. Administration added that the current concrete would not be strong enough to hold a cenotaph, and new concrete would have to be poured.

The Bonnets Energy Centre was listed as a possible location. Administration says that the location has been identified as a conflict for Remembrance Day
Celebrations, as the ANAVETS have their Remembrance Day Activities inside the building.

The fourth location is Muskoseepi Park, in the report administration says that the location meets the standing room requirements. Nearby the location there is an existing power source at the amphitheatre. Administration says that Muskoseepi is the most ideal location out of the four.

The legion is currently looking at options to build a brand-new cenotaph as well.
