Cadets in Clairmont to move into new venue

Clairmont cadets have found a new venue to host weekly meetings.

President of the Clairmont Navy Branch, Dean Langton says that the cadets will now be using the German Canadian Club in Clairmont. Langton says that this venue is roughly two and a half times bigger then their previous building.

The shared area will allow the program to expand the number of cadets, increases the room for storage, and more area for cadets to practice parading, Langton said.

Langton mentioned that they currently have 38 cadets, and are expecting to parade in 41 days this year, starting after Labor Day. In previous years the program has sent cadets to camps in Vernon and Quadra, in British Columbia. Langton says during their time at the camps, they have learned plenty of life-long skills.

“We have had a couple cadets there over the past couple of years, and they absolutley loved it. They learned everything they can about sailing, and leadership, it was wonderful.”

Registration for the cadets is open Wednesdays. Langton says the ages eligible is 12 to 18 years-old, and once the kid turns 18, they automatically age out.

“The cadet program in total is a great program. It teaches you leadership, and community service which is the main one. If your kid is interested, come on out to the German Canadian club, Wednesday night we start parading at around 6:30. Come on out and fill out some forms.”
