Road conditions believed to be a factor in fatal bus rollover

A charter bus rollover on Highway 43 has resulted in the death of a Grande Prairie woman and sent several others to hospital.

Grande Prairie RCMP said officers responded to the scene west of Debolt at about 10:27 p.m. on Feb. 7. Fire crews and multiple EMS units also attended.

Police said there were 37 passengers on board the bus at the time of the rollover, including adults and children. A 50-year-old woman was declared dead at the scene.
Six passengers were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Uninjured passengers were transported to the Debolt fire hall to keep warm. A second bus was brought in to take 16 passengers with minor injuries to hospital. RCMP said those passengers were assessed and later released.

An RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the scene and the investigation is ongoing. Police said road conditions are believed to have been a factor. Initial findings indicate the bus struck the median, rolled over once and came to rest upright.
