Officer involved shooting details released as ASIRT continues investigation

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team continues to investigate a violent confrontation between a Grande Prairie RCMP officer and a man north of the city earlier this month.

Police were called at about 3 p.m. on Jan. 6, 2026, after receiving a report of a vehicle being driven erratically in the area. An officer later found the vehicle stuck in a ditch.

Authorities say when the officer approached the vehicle, the driver attacked him with a knife. The officer shot the man with a service pistol. When the man did not drop the knife, the officer also deployed a conducted energy weapon.

Other RCMP members arrived a short time later and took the man into custody. Both the suspect and officer involved to taken to hospital for their injuries, and both were released.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the incident after the Police Review Commission classified it as a Level 1 matter under the Police Act. Level 1 investigations involve cases of serious injury, death or serious or sensitive allegations related to police conduct.
