Alberta Municipalities is looking forward to the new year with a near 50 per cent turnover of their board.
In 2025, Grande Prairie City Councillor and former ABmunies Vice President, Dylan Bressey was elected President for the board. According to officials, the group also saw a brand new C-O to the board.
According to Bressey, the board was not the only one’s seeing changes being made across the province.
“This year we had about 40 per cent of councillors across Alberta was newly elected, and it’s been a privilege to get to know these newly elected people who are passionate, dedicated community members,” he said.
Bressey says the administration wants to go into 2026 building on some of the successes that they saw in 2025, with one of those being support from the Alberta Government.
“We were really excited to see the provincial government restore low-cost lending to municipalities, which has saved our members millions of dollars. Next year we are really going to be focusing on accumulative impact that provincial decisions have made on municipalities.”
According to Bressey, the board was surprised to see the Premier promise to bring more advocacy to specific funding items.
“At our convention the Premier promised to advocate for an increased family community support services funding. We were really excited to see the premier commit to that advocacy.”
Even with some advocacy for ABmunies, Bressey says the board still has some work to do for 2026.
“We’re facing this state of the province where municipalities have had revenue removed from them, had their cost increased and the province has taken property tax room away from them. Which really is having an impact on local budgets.”
