Mayor Jackie Clayton reflects on 2025

In 2025, The City of Grande Prairie hosted a municipal election that saw two new faces join City Council. While also managing the fast-tracking Grande Prairie Police Service, as they transition into the police of jurisdiction for October of 2026.

Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton says one of the things that council did in the year that stuck out to her, was the work council put in attempting to bring more doctors to Grande Prairie. Clayton says that she recognizes that a portion of the community is without a family doctor.

“We focused a lot on that attraction, as well as retention. We are working with AHS in regards to attraction, and so in 2025 there was a significant number of professionals that moved to Grande Prairie that started working in the Regional Hospital and clinics,” she said.

Clayton mentioned that council continued to hear about more housing in the community.

“We heard early on that we had a significant need for multi-family housing. our vacancy rate for housing was close to zero per cent, and with that we’ve had approximately 800 new starts on multi-family, (homes.)”

Clayton says that she hopes the community to connects with others in the new year, and to remind yourself why you are in Grande Prairie.

“The year ahead is really an invitation for people to reconnect with each other. Remind yourself on why you moved to Grande Prairie, whether it was a job opportunity or whether it was to be closer with family and friends, and I think that is what keeps people here. We’re a very vibrant growing community, and with that brings challenges every day. Something that I’m excited for in 2026 is the momentum that we are feeling and building in Grande Prairie.”
