Make-A-Wish to have their first Trees of Joy event in Grande Prairie

Four Kids from across the Peace Region will be attending Make-A-Wish Canada’s Northern Alberta’s Trees of Joy event in Grande Prairie on Wednesday.

The event is the first that Make-A-Wish has held in the city. Each of the four kids are either currently or have struggled with some-sort of critical illness, and will take place on Wednesday, Nov 26.

Make-A-Wish Northern Alberta Chapter Director Jen Garden says the “Wish Kids” have all had a life-changing illness.

“These are all kids who have been very sick, they have either had cancer or maybe a neurological disorder, or a cognitive heart defect. There are a variety of illness that qualify these kids for wishes.”

Over the past month, a group of donors have been paired with each kid, each donor group have received information regarding the kids interests and what bring them joy. The donor groups have went out to buy gifts valued for around $10,000 for each child. Not only will the kids be getting the well-earned gifts, but a custom-made decorative tree with the kids favourite colours, themes, candy and more. In the past, families have typically kept these trees up year-round.

Once the kids get to see their dream tree and all of their gifts, they will have breakfast with the donor group, so the group can better understand both the kid and the families journey.

This event will be closed off to the public.
