Heat warning issued for City of Grande Prairie region

A heat warning is in place for the area around the City of Grande Prairie due to a long-duration heat event.

Environment Canada issued the warning at 4:22 a.m. Wednesday, due to forecasted daytime highs ranging between 29 and 33 degrees Celsius over the next week and overnight lows ranging between 10 and 16 degrees Celsius.

According to the warning, there is a concern that the effects of the heat could build over time. Those in the region are advised to take precautions such as rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day, taking frequent breaks from the heat by spending time in cooled indoor spaces and staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water or other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages.

Drivers are also reminded to check for kids or pets when exiting a vehicle and not to leave anyone in a closed vehicle for any length of time.

Symptoms to watch for for heat stroke or heat exhaustion include a high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting, and unconsciousness.

According to the forecast, the heat is expected to end early next week.
