Warkentin pleased to see COOL repeal move forward

Earlier this year Canada was been awarded to the right to seek a billion dollars in trade sanctions in retaliation for Country of Origin Labeling rules on beef and pork. However, it’s not clear whether or not the Liberal government will be pursuing those sanctions.

Legislation to repeal the rules is currently being drafted before US Congress, but International Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland has refused to say whether or not retaliatory measures are on the table while the bill is awaiting a vote and the President’s signature. Conservative Agriculture Critic and Grande Prairie-Mackenzie MP Chris Warkentin is criticizing Freeland’s reluctance to comment, saying that she needs to do more than sit around and wait.

It’s believed that since the rules on meat labeling were introduced, they have cost the Canadian meat industry billions of dollars. The World Trade Organization awarded the ruling to Canada and Mexico earlier this year, saying that requiring meat to be labelled by country of origin violates the United States’ trade obligations.
