Harry Balfour School opens outdoor ice rink for PE students, community members

Harry Balfour School students will have the chance to engage in some on-campus wintertime fun thanks to the school’s brand-new outdoor skating rink.

According to the Peace Wapiti Public School Division, an “overwhelming” amount of community support made the project possible.

The school took a moment to thank several sponsors including ARC Resources who purchased the rink, the Five Mile Hall Ag Society for allowing the school to use its land, Peace Wapiti Academy construction students for building benches on the rink, and the County of Grande Prairie for their support and encouragement throughout the project’s duration.

“Thanks to an overwhelming amount of support from local businesses and residents, a new outdoor skating rink has become a reality,” the school said in a release.

Harry Balfour School Assistant Principal Mrs. Buck says she was “overjoyed” with the amount of support from the community.

“When Mrs. Small came to me and said she was looking into creating a skating rink, I had no idea that so many businesses, organizations, and individuals would be so willing to step up to make a difference in our community,” she says.

The ice rink will be utilized for physical education classes at the school and enjoyed by community members for years to come.
