Mercer Peace River Pulp and Woodland Cree First Nation will continue their co-ownership of Peace River Logging after signing a “historic agreement” extending their relationship.
Officials say the renewed partnership is a significant step forward for both parties, extending their positive working relationship, and reinforcing their commitment to sustainable forestry practices.
Mercer Peace River and Woodland Cree have established what they call one of the most successful logging operations in the region, as the two parties have co-owned the operation since 2004. Officials suggest under the new agreement, the jobs of more than 80 local workers have been secured.
Managing Director of Mercer Peace River Roger Ashfield says his organization remains committed to working with Indigenous communities and looks forward to a prosperous relationship in the years to come.
“Our partnership with Woodland Cree has been built on mutual respect and a shared vision for a sustainable future,” he says. “Together, we will continue to be dedicated to sustainable management of forest resources.”
Woodland Cree Chief Isaac Laboucan-Avirom agrees, saying the renewed agreement marks an “important milestone” in his community’s partnership with Mercer Peace River.
