GP Sport Connection accepting nominations for 2025 Northwest Alberta Sport Excellence Awards

The Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection is currently accepting nominations for the 2025 Northwest Alberta Sport Excellence Awards.

The ceremony aims to honour the achievements of local amateur athletes and the coaches, volunteers, officials, and leaders who support them. The awards will recognize accomplishments achieved from January 1st, 2024, to December 31st of the same year.

Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection Executive Director Karna Germsheid says each year, the event is significant as it serves as a chance to recognize the people who have dedicated their year to building up athletics in the Grande Prairie region.

“I think it’s incredibly important to recognize the people, especially the people supporting the community, our athletes are not just athletes by themselves,” she says.

Athletes, coaches, and other sports officials from Fox Creek to Slave Lake, the NWT border, and the BC border are eligible for nomination.

Several awards are up for grabs this year across 14 categories such as the Female and Male Athletes of the Year, their junior categories, Coach of the Year, and the Outstanding Official award to name a few.

Every year, the event is capped off with the presentation of the Award of Sport Excellence, which officials describe as a “prestigious honour” presented to individuals who demonstrate outstanding performance in their sport. The award recognizes athletes and coaches who excel in competition, as well as leadership, dedication, and setting a standard for excellence in their sport.

Nominations will be open from January 1st to the 31st of this year.
