Peace Regional RCMP encourage drug awareness after seizing nearly 15 grams of fentanyl in Grimshaw

The Peace Regional RCMP seized nearly 15 grams of suspected fentanyl after officers were made aware of an “unknown, suspicious substance” located at a business in the area of 56th Street in Grimshaw.

Law enforcement ultimately seized a total of 14.5 grams of suspected fentanyl from the location; however, there are no suspects at this time.

As a result of their find, the RCMP is urging members of the community to be aware of the dangers of various drugs, and what they look like, and to ensure that any packages that may contain suspicious substances are quickly reported to police, without touching the substance.

According to the RCMP, drugs like fentanyl can be found in several forms including powder, crystals, liquid, vapour, or pills. Police maintain that fentanyl can be absorbed through the skin or accidentally inhaled, and Health Canada estimates that a lethal dose of our fentanyl can be as little as two grams, or roughly a “few grains of table salt” for a healthy adult.

Some symptoms of fentanyl exposure can include drowsiness, vomiting, and respiratory issues, while larger doses can lead to cardiac arrest or even death.

Police say anyone who is exposed to fentanyl accidentally should immediately seek medical attention.
