Grande Prairie homicide rate tops major Alberta cities

There were three reported homicides in the Grande Prairie region last year, giving the area a homicide rate higher than both Edmonton and Calgary.  At 3.46 per 100,000 residents, it was also significantly higher than the national rate of 1.45.

The body of Courtney Johnstone was found at the Aquatera landfill on February 15th, Devin Pisch was killed in a shootout at the Cutbank staging area on June 25th, and John William Rock of Edmonton was shot outside of the Canadian Brewhouse in the early morning hours of October first.

The calculations are based on Statistics Canada population estimates for both municipal and rural areas surrounding Grande Prairie covered by RCMP. GP is on pace for an even higher rate this year, with five murders already.
