Olympians to speak at 7th Annual Breakfast with the Guys

Two olympic bobsledders will be speaking at a yearly event that focuses on educating young men about gender based violence tomorrow morning. Former CFL player Jesse Lumsden and broadcaster Helen Upperton will be speaking at Breakfast with the Guys this year.

Planning committee member Mike Anderson says that while the breakfast is open to anyone, the event is aimed at community leaders, coaches, and young male athletes.

“Our group kind of felt that coaches, athletes, community leaders, those are the role models so if we can positively influence them for positive change, we think that’s how change or a movement happens.”

Anderson says those role models have the ability to challenge a culture or attitudes that treat women as second class citizens. He says he hopes those attending Breakfast with the Guys will think critically about whether they are contributing to the problem as bystanders, rather than challenging the attitudes and cultures that perpetuate them.
