Two GP Storm players take home Players of the Week Awards

A pair of Grande Prairie Storm skaters took home two of three AJHL Players of the Week Awards.

Storm Defenceman Matthew Gillard grabbed the AJHL Player of the Week award, with his teammate Logan Cunningham taking home the AJHL Defensive Player of the Week.

Gillard managed to notch four points from November 25th to December 1st. Not to be outdone, Storm Captain Logan Cunningham followed close behind, recording a three-point week himself.

The two NWT-born defencemen have led the Storm’s defensive core to the fewest goals against across the league, with just 57, tying for first place in the AJHL North Division.

During a tough-fought 3-2 loss against the Lloydminster Bobcats, Gillard picked up an assist on both Grande Prairie goals, while Cunningham netted one and added an assist. The next night, the Storm suffered another one-goal loss against the Bonnyville Pontiacs; however, Gillard grabbed two assists, while Cunningham added one more during the game.

Gillard is in his first AJHL season and has recorded five points in just his last three games played. Cunningham is currently in his third run as a member of the Storm, and stands at second place among all AJHL defencemen with 18 points across 22 games played.
