Rain, sleet and snow much more: GPES officials offer up winter driving safety tips

Grande Prairie Enforcement Services has joined several provincial policing agencies in encouraging safe driving throughout the winter season.

As Grande Prairie’s forecast seemingly changes every every hour, Enforcement Services maintains that drivers should always be ready to pivot their driving patters with the conditions in mind.

Peace Officer Sergeant Ryan Hoffman says winter conditions are always the most difficult to navigate, but by taking a few easy steps to prepare, Grande Prairie drivers can be better equipped to deal with any dangerous situations that come with winter driving.

We want to ensure that everyone gets home safely,” he says. “We encourage all motorists to take their time while driving, leave extra space between your vehicle and those around you, and avoid distractions.”

GPES says simple steps like ensuring your vehicle is clear of frost and snow before driving, keeping headlights on at all times, and using low-beam lights can all help to provide the best visibility possible while travelling in less than desirable conditions.

Additionally, GPES recommends drivers slow down and remember that posted speed limits are intended for ideal road conditions, leave more space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you, and signal “well in advance” of turning to give other drivers more time to anticipate and react.
