UPDATE: Library slashing late fee limit

UPDATE: A previous version of this story included incorrect numbers for current and future fine limits. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Starting in the new year, Grande Prairie Public Library users will only be allowed a maximum of $10 in late fees before their privileges are suspended. Board member and city councillor Chris Thiessen says it’s a big drop from the current $30 limit.

“Looking over our accounting, we have a lot of carried over fines that sort of look bad against the library, especially when you start adding it up to the tens of thousands of dollars. It was a choice by the board on a recommendation to lower that to be more in line with provincial standards.”

Having their books balanced will also help when the library applies for grants. Thiessen says they’re encouraging people to return their books and pay fines on time, and are willing to work with users on payment plans.
