Sports and recreation brought up numerous times during County of GP Committee of the Whole meetings

Good news for athletes in the County of GP came out of county council’s recent committee of the whole meetings.

Pickleball players can rejoice after the committee received an information update from the Grande Prairie Pickleball Club, which indicated the sport has seen “remarkable” growth, both internationally and at the local level.

While the club did not seek any county funding during the meeting, they have proactively reached out to the City of Grande Prairie, and several local representatives, including MP Chris Warkentin and MLA Nolan Dyck to explore potential grant opportunities for any future projects.

The committee also received an update on the County Sportsplex’s performance and occupancy over the past year.

According to county administration, as of the end of September, the Sportsplex 2024 operating budget is projected to exceed expectations by more than $148K, reflecting a 3.9 per cent improvement over last year, largely due to reduced utility costs and expenses, along with a 12 per cent revenue increase.
