Help firefighters by clearing snow from hydrants

When it comes to fighting a fire, every second counts. That’s why the Grande Prairie Fire Department is asking residents and businesses to take the time to clear snow away from fire hydrants near their property.

Now that winter weather is officially here, hydrants can get buried under snow and ice, and firefighters will waste precious time trying to access them. To help them, clear a one metre zone around the hydrant and a visible path to the road.

As Fire Marshal James Kostuk says, every minute used finding and digging for a hydrant could mean life or death. Plus, the city has a bylaw that places the responsibility of keeping hydrants clear on the households and companies they’re next to.
