10 year sentence for 2013 fatal stabbing

A 10 year sentence has been handed to a man convicted of manslaughter in the 2013 stabbing death of 40 year old Stuart Foster. Foster was killed in May of that year at a rural property near Beaverlodge but wasn’t found by police until several days later.

58 year old Edward Desjarlais was later arrested in Dawson Creek and charged with second degree murder. He was set to stand trial next week but instead plead guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter Monday. Chief Crown Prosecutor Steven Hinkley says the sentence for his killer was based on the norm for the charge in Alberta.

“It takes into account mitigation for the guilty plea; it takes into account the particular offence and how it was committed, and it took into account the prior criminal record of the accused that did involve active violence, including a prior conviction for aggravated assault.”

Desjarlais has been given credit for 45 months time served, and has another 6 and a half years left.
