GP Storm players highlight diabetes awareness during special event game

A pair of Grande Prairie Strom skaters are taking action during Diabetes Awareness Month by hosting a special awareness game on November 15th.

When the Storm faces off against the Camrose Kodiaks, #29 Zachary Wilson and #35 Nicholas Jones will host the Diabetes Awareness Game, featuring educational initiatives and even special jerseys designed by the players to promote support for diabetes awareness.

Wilson calls the night “huge” not only for himself and Jones but for the community as a whole.

“I know there’ve been a few kids who have come up and asked us questions and come to
us for some things, both Nick and I love answering those questions at any time,” he says. “These jerseys are special to us and being able to design them definitely adds to it, I think support for this is huge.”

Jones adds that the support from his team has proven to be a big part of his success as a hockey player, saying everyone makes each other feel comfortable when talking about diabetes.

“That goes a long way, because there’s things that go on, and there’s days where your sugar’s gonna be low, not being judged for having to go off of practice and stuff, we don’t have any of that going on,” he says.

The game is scheduled for November 15th at 7:00 p.m., with a pregame ceremony scheduled right before the puck drop at 6:55 p.m. Additionally, the special event jerseys worn by the skaters will be auctioned off during and after the game.
