Clairmont sea cadet makes a splash during sailing trip in Chestermere

A local sea cadet made waves in Chestermere over the summer and says they are looking forward to continue growing the newly formed 361 Max Bernays, Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps, in Clairmont after a strong showing.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Tristan Mackay is in their fifth year of cadets and has completed Sail One and Sail Two at His Majesty’s Canadian Ship Quadra Cadet Training Centre in Comox, BC. Additionally, they have also participated in several regionally directed sailing events to continue the development of their skills on the water.

Mackay is one of 32 cadets out of the new Sea Cadet Corps in Clairmont and says the sailing weekend was quite beneficial, not only for skill development but also for the networking opportunities available between other cadet branches throughout the province who were in attendance.

I learned a lot working with the other corps,” Mackay says. “I felt that I got better at explaining sailing techniques to other cadets from the experience.”

The PO2 explains that approaching the water with a positive attitude is crucial, saying teamwork can make the difference between having a good time and capsizing your boat.

“We have to work together to have a great sailing weekend,” they say. “Sailing is great in low winds, but in high winds, you need to apply everything you have learned.”

While looking ahead, 361 Max Bernays Commanding Officer Captain Marilyn Donaldson says they are excited to continue growing the corps locally through cadets and staff.

Youths between the ages of 12 and 18 interested in becoming a cadet can visit the Cadet Program’s website for enrollment information.
