Vacant home significantly damaged by early morning fire

A vacant home for sale has been significantly damaged by an early morning fire. A neighbour noticed smoke coming from the house in the 9300 block of 128 Avenue around 2:50 a.m. and called 9-1-1.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the home itself and the flames didn’t cause any damage to nearby property. Platoon chief Bart Johnson says the first crew on scene was instrumental in knocking the fire down.

No one was home at the time and no injuries have been reported. Extensive damage was done to the building but there’s no estimate of the cost of damages just yet.

Investigators will start looking for a cause on Monday. In the meantime, the Grande Prairie Fire Department urges residents to have working smoke detectors.
