68 Ave grant application denied

A $5.5 million dollar grant application for a joint federal and provincial funding for the city’s 68 Avenue bridge project has been rejected. The New Building Canada Fund for small communities was announced last year but wasn’t available for applications until early 2015.

Mayor Bill Given says council is disappointed not to be able to capitalize on the funding.

“Absolutely we’re disappointed that there weren’t any funds from this federal program to support the development of what is obviously very important infrastructure in our community and it’s something that we will look to raise with the appropriate levels as we can, going forward.”

The Small Communities Fund is available only to Canadian communities with less than 100,000 residents.

The only project in the Grande Prairie area to receive funding from the Small Communities Fund this year is Aquatera’s construction of a trunk sewer line along 116 street to connect with the Clairmont waste water lagoon.
