“Staggering” number of tickets handed out in school zones

Grande Prairie drivers are still not getting the message when it comes to slowing down in school zones. In just the first two weeks of classes, 892 tickets were handed out in school zones around Grande Prairie.

Drivers were caught speeding up to 70 kilometres an hour, earning them tickets over $350 dollars. Fines were also handed out for parking, distracted driving, not wearing a seatbelt and passing in a school zone.

Peace Officer Sergeant Gordon McMahon calls the number staggering, especially when comparing them to a city with nearly 20 times our population. The City of Calgary issued 31 school zone-related tickets in the first week of school, compared to GP’s 499.
