New rules on the way for signage in the city

Rules regarding how signs around the Grande Prairie can be posted are currently being drawing up by city administration. The results of a survey on how residents feel about billboards, free standing signs, and electronic signs have been compiled and will be used to help with creating the draft regulations.

Senior Planner Dan Whelton says the electronic signs that currently exist in the city will remain standing, but the way they display their content may be regulated.

“Some of the issues that we may want to look at are if there are certain electronic message displays that are exceedingly bright and whether we can adopt some regulations that say that even though the sign is there it does need to be toned down so it is not quite so bright at night.”

Whelton says in a month or two once the draft regulations are complete they will be asking for input from the public and the sign industry once again.
