Large diesel spill at Co-Op Cardlock

An estimated 1,000 litres of diesel was spilled at the Co-Op Cardlock on 109 Street earlier tonight. The call came into the Grande Prairie Fire Department around 6:20 p.m and by the time crews arrived the spill had spread onto the roadway.

Platoon Chief Tony Lutzmann says firefighters were able to immediately dike the fuel to a storm drain. An industrial vac truck was then called to clean up the spill, with the help of the city’s vac truck.

The scene has been turned over to the Co-Op Operations Manager to finish the cleaning. The area has been cordoned off but the gas station is still open.

The cause stems from a tanker truck that blew a connection while transferring diesel fuel to the storage facility. The driver was reportedly able to shut the transfer pump off to stop the spill before emergency services arrived.
